MAKER STORIES

Molly of neon lace

The Nooks - February 12, 2020

My name is Molly Barber and I’m the maker behind neon lace jewellery. I’ve always loved making jewellery, ever since I was a little girl making friendship bracelets for my friends. Back in the mid-2000s, I took some metalsmithing classes at George Brown college. I did the course and loved it, but sadly had to put it aside for a while. Two years ago, I rediscovered my jewellery supplies and it felt like I had rediscovered a missing part of myself. neon lace was born.

With jewellery, I believe that versatility is key. To me, the ideal piece can take you from the office to an evening out seamlessly. I endeavour to create pieces that capture that versatility and timelessness; that match the person as well as the outfit. All of my jewellery is made using semi-precious stones and crystals combined with metals like brass, silver, copper and surgical steel. I also offer custom orders for people looking for something different.

People often ask me where the name neon lace came from. Honestly, the name came from the unique vibe which has evolved out of this brand; a mixture of modern, minimalist clean lines and organic shapes, offset by old-fashioned touches like a bit of filigree or an antique skeleton key. While neon lace’s style is ever-evolving I like to think of it as “present reminiscent”; a modern take on vintage styles that represents the perfect marriage between old and new.

I’m passionate about what I do. I love the transformative nature of jewellery— it can change the character of an outfit, and change your outlook with it. It can make your little black dress into something fierce. It can make you feel powerful, empowered, and strong. It can take the ordinary and make it extraordinary.
